Acteon to Supply Hydraulic Hammer for Hornsea 3 Monopile Installation

Acteon will supply its MENCK MHU4400S hydraulic hammer, along with a pile sleeve and an anvil, designed for monopiles of up to eleven metres in diameter.

“We are proud to support the Hornsea 3 project with our proven technology. This development is a significant milestone for UK energy security and aligns with the government’s ambitious climate and clean energy goals. MENCK’s MHU series hydraulic hammers are designed to deliver maximum efficiency in the most challenging offshore environments,” said Tim Erdmann, Head of Projects at MENCK.

Ørsted was awarded a Contract for Difference (CfD) for Hornsea Three in July 2022, with the developer saying that with an installed capacity of 2.9 GW, Hornsea 3 was the largest single offshore wind farm in the world.

Located approximately 160 kilometres off the Yorkshire coast, the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm will feature about 200 Siemens Gamesa’s 14 MW turbines.

The developer contracted Haizea Bilbao and SeAH Wind for the supply of XXL monopiles for the project.

The monopile foundations will be installed by Cadeler under a contract signed with Ørsted in 2023. The units will be stored at Steel River Quay before they are loaded onto offshore wind installation vessels.

Hornsea 3 is expected to be operational in 2027.
